Working pattern | This is a full time role, though hours will vary over the year, reflecting our busier and quieter seasons. September to early December is the busiest time and there will be occasional evening and weekend work required. |
Workplace | It is important for us all to work together some of the time (particularly during our busier times), but the BIFA team all work flexibly and in a hybrid of home/office (central London) |

ABOUT BIFA
BIFA (British Independent Film Awards C.I.C.) is an internationally renowned organisation that celebrates, promotes, and supports independent filmmaking and filmmakers in the UK. The annual Awards have a particular focus on highlighting the most promising new filmmaking talent emerging in the UK and supporting the development of those individuals. BIFA also coordinates an extensive suite of talent development training for emerging filmmakers and on screen talent, including the Springboard Programme, and ED&I training courses. As well as the annual award ceremony, BIFA promotes independent film to audiences all year round.
THE ROLE
BIFA is looking for an enthusiastic, proactive Communications Assistant to support our communications across all of our activity – industry and public facing. They will work across all aspects of the organisation’s activities: the annual awards, industry programmes and ongoing social campaign. This is a unique opportunity for an organised, enthusiastic independent film fan with a flair for comms and admin. This role would suit a motivated, creative and reliable forward thinker, who enjoys working as part of a small team.
As well as being the first point of call for external communications across all aspects of BIFA’s work, you will assist in the delivery of effective social media and email campaigns to support BIFA’s annual activities. The role will input into wider marketing plans and campaign activities, attending film screenings and industry events where needed. We’re a very small team so everyone gets involved in everything and effective public communication is essential to the impact of all aspects of our work. Therefore you’ll be supporting the comms and administrative efforts that underpin our high profile events and programmes – our award ceremony, our training and talent development programmes and our audience development work.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Comms:
- Coordinating all key BIFA public and industry stakeholder communications, including:
- with awards entrants: entry deadlines, materials requests, licences
- with voters: voting and screening information
- with industry stakeholders including committees, Board, partners: governance information, updates, event invitations
- for our industry talent development programmes: Springboard participants, mentors and trainers, Breakthrough Performer Programme participants, partner organisation (We Are Bridge) and funders
- for our ED&I training programmes: communication with participants and facilitators
- Ongoing community outreach, including identifying and developing relationships with outreach partners, maintaining the comms, outreach and contact database
- Compiling the monthly newsletter and mailing list management
- Media monitoring and logging press cuts
- Updating the website with news and events
Social & Content:
- Assisting with coordination of the weekly editorial social calendar, including drafting copy, posting and scheduling social media posts and monitoring analytics
- Assisting with monthly and annual social reporting
- Assisting with capturing social content at junkets and screenings
- Assisting with creation and quality control of social assets including stills and video
- Assisting with awards social, both planning and delivery
- Assisting with daily community management of all social media channels
- Keeping track of and organising video footage, photography and other media from BIFA events (including the ceremony)
Administration:
- Assisting with processing entries and collating long listed film materials for the awards
- Assisting with preparation of wrap reports and presentations for award and event partners
- Preparation of materials, taking and distributing notes for voter sub-group meetings
- Provide support at events including the BIFA ceremony, Springboard seminars and events, premieres and festivals
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Organisation, communication and attention to detail: We are looking for someone with a flair and affinity for coordinating intricate administrative projects and with exceptional verbal and written communication skills across a variety of different registers and tones (social media, partner presentations etc.).
Time management and multi-tasking: We are a small team, our awards timeline gets very tight especially in the Autumn and lots of things happen at once, so a calm head under pressure is also very important
Skills & Abilities:
- Excellent organisational skills, able to prioritise multiple delivery deadlines
- High quality verbal and written communication skills
- Strong writing and copy-editing abilities
- A good eye for design and branding consistency
- A demonstrable interest in film and awareness of current landscape, with a keen interest in pop culture
Experience & Proficiencies:
- Extensive working knowledge of social media platforms, particularly Instagram and TikTok
- Experience managing the day-to-day running of multiple social media accounts and using scheduling software (e.g. Buffer)
- Experience editing and QCing static and video assets
- Experience using the following:
- Mailchimp (or similar)
- Pages/Keynote
- Eventbrite
- Google Drive/Docs, especially GoogleDocs and GoogleSheets
- WordPress (or similar)
- Adobe Photoshop
- Premier Pro
- Mail merge
Also helpful:
- Experience using Notion and Slack
- Experience of podcast production, content creation
