BIFA announces 2024 Juries

The juries have been announced for BIFA 2024, with each one representing a breadth of talent across film and TV.

Renowned casting director Karmel Cochrane (Rye Lane, Saltburn) chairs the Performance Jury, which is made up of Academy Award nominee Maria Bakalova (The Apprentice, Bodies Bodies Bodies), DJ and presenter Edith Bowman, actors Douglas Booth, who will appear in season 2 of The Sandman, Jodhi May who currently stars in Dune: Prophecy and has previously appeared in BIFA winning films The House of Mirth and The Silent Twins and Adam Pearson who appeared in BIFA nominated Under the Skin and currently stars opposite Sebastian Stan in Gotham Award winning A Different Man. The group includes familiar BIFA faces Vivian Oparah, last year’s winner of Breakthrough Performance, Katherine Waterston, nominated for her role in The End We Start From and Nathan Stewart-Jarrett who won Best Joint Lead Performance with George Mackay in 2023 for Femme.

The Filmmaker Jury includes creative talent from the across the industry and is chaired by Jono McLeod, who was nominated for his directorial debut My Old School at BIFA 2022. The group includes renowned critic Wendy Ide, producer, commissioner and columnist Anna Higgs, actress and producer Hannah Walters (This Is England, Boiling Point, A Thousand Blows) and BAFTA winning director Joe Wright (Darkest Hour, Atonement, Pride and Prejudice, Cyrano). Representing writers are Sukey Venables Fisher (Electricity, The Chemistry of Death), Nathan Bryon (Bloods, Rye Lane), previous BIFA nominee Abi Morgan (Brick Lane, The Iron Lady, Shame, Suffragette) and former BIFA winner Savanah Leaf, who won Best Debut Director for Earth Mama in 2023. The winners in the following categories are decided by votes open to all of BIFA’s voters who have watched the nominations:

  • Best British Independent Film
  • Best International Independent Film
  • Best British Short Film
  • Best Feature Documentary
  • The Raindance Maverick Award
  • The ten Craft categories (Casting, Cinematography, Costume Design, Effects, Editing, Make-Up & Hair Design, Original Music, Music Supervision, Production Design, Sound)

BIFA also presents two honorary awards: The Richard Harris Award, which is bestowed by BIFA’s Board and Nomination Committee; and the Special Jury Prize, intended to recognise an individual or organisation for their outstanding contribution within the British independent film industry, which is decided by both BIFA Juries.

In contention for their votes this year are 21 outstanding British films, including Kneecap, Love Lies Bleeding, Santosh, The Outrun and On Becoming A Guinea Fowl, nominated across 24 categories this year, with some already scooping up multiple craft awards.
